One of the most terrifying jumps for the motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel was at Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho. On September 8th, 1974, Knievel planned to jump across the 1,600 ft. canyon in a custom-built rocket known as the Skycycle X-2, but, that jump was not successfully completed.
On the day of the jump, Knievel’s family and the masses anxiously stood by as the countdown began. After lift off, Knievel’s parachute opened prematurely and the rocket took a nosedive, spiraling down towards the Snake River Canyon. The Skycycle X-2 disappeared 500 feet below the canyon wall where the rocket and Knievel could not be seen. Two helicopters flew down into the canyon and were surprised to find Knievel had survived the jump. The nose of the rocket had hit the side of the canyon wall and bounced off, miraculously, Knievel walked away without injuries.
After the stunt, there was a lot of speculation that Evel Knievel had pulled the parachutes on purpose, possibly pulling off the greatest publicity stunt of all time.
